What Is Registered Massage Therapy?

Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) is a regulated healthcare profession in Alberta focused on the assessment and treatment of the soft tissues and joints of the body. Using hands-on techniques applied to muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue, RMTs address a wide range of conditions including chronic and acute pain, postural dysfunction, stress and nervous system dysregulation, and injury recovery.

At Big Idea Family Chiropractic, massage therapy is available as a standalone service and as a complement to chiropractic care. Combining both approaches in the same clinic makes it easier to address musculoskeletal complaints from multiple angles, particularly for patients managing complex or long-standing conditions where soft tissue and joint function are both contributing factors.

Your Registered Massage Therapist at Big Idea

Philippa Desjardins is a Registered Massage Therapist and recent graduate of Makami College's 3,000-hour Advanced Clinical Massage Therapy Diploma program. She brings over 10 years of experience in the health and wellness field, including a background in therapeutic recreation and peer services through her work with the Canadian Mental Health Association Calgary Region.

Philippa's approach is rooted in individualized care: building treatment plans around each patient's specific concerns, movement patterns, and goals rather than applying a fixed routine. She places particular emphasis on educating patients about their bodies throughout the treatment process, using clear, everyday language to help them understand what is happening and why.

Her clinical skill set includes deep tissue techniques, manual lymphatic drainage, trigger point release, myofascial cupping, nerve flossing, orthopedic assessment, Swedish and relaxation techniques. She holds an ACMT Certificate of Distinction for Years 1 and 2, and is licensed and insured in Alberta.

Philippa is accepting new patients at Big Idea Family Chiropractic.

Swedish and Relaxation Massage

Flowing, moderate-pressure techniques that reduce cortisol, improve circulation, ease muscle tension, and support the nervous system. An effective approach for stress, fatigue, and general wellness maintenance.

Benefits of Massage Therapy

Pain relief and injury recovery: Massage therapy reduces muscle tension, breaks down adhesions, and promotes circulation to injured tissue, supporting faster recovery from both acute and chronic musculoskeletal complaints.

Stress and nervous system regulation: Hands-on soft tissue work has a measurable effect on the nervous system, reducing cortisol, lowering heart rate, and shifting the body out of a stress response. Patients commonly report improved sleep and reduced anxiety following regular treatment.

Improved mobility and flexibility: Releasing tight muscles, fascia, and restricted connective tissue restores range of motion and makes everyday movement feel easier, particularly for patients managing postural strain or overuse from work and sport.

Complement to chiropractic and other care: Massage therapy works well alongside chiropractic adjustments, helping the soft tissue surrounding the joints relax and hold corrections more effectively. Many Big Idea patients combine both for better and longer-lasting results.

Headache and tension relief: Trigger point release and soft tissue work in the neck, shoulders, and upper back are among the most effective manual approaches for tension-type headaches and cervicogenic head pain.

No referral is required. You can book directly with Philippa online or by calling the clinic.

Most extended health benefit plans in Alberta include coverage for massage therapy provided by a Registered Massage Therapist. Philippa Desjardins is a licensed and insured RMT in Alberta, which is the credential most insurers require for reimbursement. Big Idea Family Chiropractic offers direct billing to most major insurance providers.
Yes, and for many patients the two work well together. Chiropractic care addresses joint alignment and spinal mechanics; massage therapy works with the muscles, fascia, and soft tissue surrounding those joints. Receiving both at Big Idea means your practitioners are in the same building and can coordinate care around your specific presentation.

Sessions are available in 60 , 90 and 120-minute increments depending on your needs and the areas being addressed. For a first appointment covering a new complaint, 60 minutes is typically recommended so there is adequate time for intake, assessment, and treatment.

Your first appointment begins with a brief health history and discussion of your current concerns and treatment goals. Philippa will ask about areas of pain or restriction, any relevant medical history, and your preferences for pressure and focus. Treatment follows in the same visit. You are always in control of the pressure and approach throughout the session.
